Students Visit Glace de Mer Glacier

February ResearchStudents in the SCIN 1510 Global Climate Change class at Webster Geneva Campus visited the Glace de Mer glacier in Chamonix, France on Sunday 3 March 2019. This unique experience allowed the students to see the effects of climate change up close. To reach the glacier, students took the vintage Montenvers train up to the mountainside. To reach the glacier and the man-made ice cave within the glacier, the students had to descend 430 steps. The number of steps increase every year as the glacier shrinks due to climate change. Along the steps are markers indicating the height of the glacier in previous years. Professor Yvonne Moussy, the instructor of the class, felt the students were stunned at the rate of glacier retreat. This trip had the following achievements she said, “the students were able to visualize the effect of climate change on glaciers, and this gave them an opportunity to reflect on the impact of climate change globally.”
